Stop the presses... Archive.org says OK to download auds, stream boards
OK, so it looks like either the GD organization gave an ambiguous instruction to archive.org, or the Live Music Archive people misinterpreted what they were asked to do, or a face-saving formulation has been developed by the Dead and the Archive folks are politely carrying their water.
In a post entitled Good News and an Apology: GD on the Internet Archive, Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle and volunteer archivist Matt Vernon exlain the kerfluffle thusly:
We at archive.org now realize that our mistaken attempts to move quickly were based on what we thought the Grateful Dead wanted.
For this we apologize both to the Grateful Dead and their community.
There has been a great deal of reaction, our actions have caused more than necessary.
We believe these changes will be more appropriate for both the Grateful Dead and its community:
- Audience recordings will be restored as they were before— for download and streaming.
- Soundboard recordings will be available streaming only.
Thank you all for helping guide this process. There may be changes in the future, but for now there is access to great concerts, and the audience recordings may be downloaded from here freely.
This will take a day or two to fully implement.
Also: the Grateful Dead News blog has really done a great job of keeping abreast of this story as its unfolded, recently posting a history of the GD music etree project and how it got to the Internet Archive and some juicy insider-y process gossip from the New York Times.

Thanks for the shout...and thanks for good info too. The MSM has only referenced the petition when discussing the Deadhead "backlash." But I think it was the message boards and the blogs that kept the up the momentum. I found McNally's comments about the lack of "community" sadly ironic. The Deadhead online community is very strong and the last couple of weeks have certainly proved that.
